What Is Hydrostatic Testing?

Hydrostatic testing is one of two methods of testing pressurized systems to make sure that they are safe for use. The other method of pressure testing is known as static testing. Generally, hydrostatic testing is preferred over static testing because it is much safer. This is because hydrostatic tests use incompressible liquids such as water and oil while static tests use gases such as nitrogen and argon, which are compressible.

Why are Pressure Tests Important?

Leaks, weakened pipes and joints are some of the most common problems that pressure systems have. Finding these problems by conducting visual inspections alone is very hard. This is where pressure tests come in.

How is Hydrostatic Testing Done?

When a pressure system is being tested, it is first sealed and then filled with an incompressible liquid. Depending on the volume of your pressure system and the pressure that needs to be tested, this may take some time.

After that’s done, the technicians then subject the system to a certain amount of pressure for a certain amount of time. This pressurization causes the system to expand and the readings of this change are recorded. The technicians then physically inspect your pressure system to make sure that it is not leaking and that its shape hasn’t been permanently distorted.

Once the results are measured, the liquid from the pressure system is drained. Depending on the results of the test, the technicians will advise you on the next steps that you will need to take to rectify the state of your pressure system.

Most of the time, this involves fixing the problems that the technicians found and then conducting another hydrostatic test to ensure that your plumbing system has been fully repaired.

How Do I Know If I Should Have My Pressure System Checked?

There are several warning signs that may show that your plumbing system has too much pressure. Such signs include:

  • Banging or knocking noises

  • Leaking outlets such as taps that have been turned off

  • Running out of hot water quickly

  • Vibrating pipes

and so on.

If you think that your pressure system might have a problem, do not attempt to fix it yourself. Call the experts.

Are Hydrostatic Tests Safe?

Hydrostatic tests are the first line of defense from pressure-related problems with your plumbing system. Whenever a pressure system is being built, it must be tested to ensure its integrity and that it has no leaks.

Remember, you should never attempt to conduct a pressure test by yourself. While low-pressure problems are relatively harmless, complications resulting from high-pressure problems could be very dangerous.
