Tunneling Under Slab

Tunneling Under Slab For Plumbing Repair

Slab leak has always been the most difficult repair work to do and in most cases, it requires expert advice to get completely repaired. One of the most effective ways to move forward with these kinds of repair work is to go with under slab tunneling. It is not practical to break our floor to find the leakage, so the best option for us would be to tunnel our way to the location of the repair area.

It is always not easy to find the leakage and only a plumber with a good level of experience can find all leakages. Once the leakage is found the next process involves the tunneling team digging in the tunnel and then the plumber completes the repair work.

But, there are more intricate details that need to know when it comes to under slab tunneling, so let us see in this article in detail how the whole process works and how much cost is involved to complete the repair work.

How Does The Tunnel Repair Process Work?

The first step of the repair process is to identify the approximate leakage through the building’s plan.  After identifying the area, we must select an area from where we can start our tunneling.

The area selected to start the tunneling process should be closer to the leakage area. The recommended size for the tunnel in the starting area is 4 feet to 7 feet.

After digging vertically, the tunneling team would move to dig horizontally towards the direction of the leakage.

The tunneling team should make sure that there are not many blockades for tunnel digging like trees, concrete columns, and similar structures. Although it is not possible to be completely free from these blockades, it is advisable to keep it at a minimal level.

After, the completion of the tunneling process, the plumber comes in to fix the leakage. After fixing the leakage, the tunneling team again comes in to close the tunnel by filling it up with the removed mud. In many cases, the leakages would be in multiple locations, so it is important that all leakages are fixed before starting to close the tunnel.

Tunnel Repair Cost

It is also highly difficult to determine an accurate cost for the whole repair work, there are a lot of variables involved in determining the cost like the number of leaks, leak location, tunnel feet length, and many more.

As a homeowner we would be having dual costs, one for the plumber to fix the leakage and the other to complete the tunnel work.

The cost for plumbing work depends on the experience of the plumber and in general, the cost varies from $40/hr – $150/hr, depending on the service required.

The cost that involves the tunnel work, is based on the number of feet tunneled, and in general, the cost per foot for tunneling hovers around $250 – $300. So, according to the number of feet tunneled the cost is calculated.

Pipe Replacement Costs

There are two types of pipes that are commonly used in most homes, PVC and cast iron. PVC is the more flexible option while cast iron piping is more durable. If you are not sure which pipes to choose from, choosing the second option is the best option.
