Sewer Main Hardware and Replacement Process

Sewage water can get logged in basements, under the landscaping or paved surfaces in the yard or beneath crawl spaces underneath your house. To make sure you are not spending money that can be saved, get an upfront initial diagnosis using an in-pipe camera. That helps you determine the exact problem. In some cases, it would be more beneficial to do a whole line replacement than pay for more repairs on partially old hardware down the road.

Replacement Hardware For Sewer Repair

Firstly there is the cost of the actual sewer line itself. It costs anywhere from $50 to $250 per foot. This price for new hardware depends on the existing hardware, where it is placed in your property and the length of the line required. Your options for the materials for the sewer line are

Cast Iron

Cast iron often reduces the line’s strength. In such cases, it is recommended to replace the whole line

Lead Solder

Lead usually leaches toxic substances into the water. It requires a professional trained in lead abatement to install. You would have to get this option only if you have existing lead piping in your property.

Plastic

Plastic is known to be less durable but is cheap and can be replaced in parts.

Main Sewer Repair Methods

Conventional Dig and Replace

This first option involves possibly uprooting flooring, lawns, gardens, patios or driveways. This may require extra equipment and additional labor. This costs between $3000 to $25000 dollars or $50 to $250 per foot.

Sewer Line Replacement

The second option is which is a state of the art process to remove and replace old piping while keeping a substantial amount of your property intact. They are of two types:

Cured-in-Place or CIPP lining which costs from $80 to $250 per foot. This is achieved by a process that creates a new and seamless pipeline by pulling a liner saturated with epoxy inside the existing pipes. This only requires excavation at one access point.

Pipe bursting is the other method that costs from $60 to $200 per foot. It uses a pneumatic or hydraulic head to break up existing brittle clay or iron piping.

Insurance Coverage & Claims

Many homeowner’s insurance policies exclude coverage for sewer lines, but you may be able to add coverage by an endorsement (rider) to cover sewer backup. You will have to discuss the coverage with your current homeowner’s insurance company to see if it is available and at what cost.

Another option is purchasing insurance coverage that specializes in sewer line protection. In some cases, there are conditions that could void a contract such as acts of nature like floods.

Common List Nature Like Floods Not Covered By Insurance

  • Locating a blockage or sewer line collapse
  • Any excavation costs to expose damaged pipes
  • Pipe replacement or repair
  • Unblocking sewer lines
  • Repairing or replacing damaged seals and joints
  • Fitting of external vales
  • Fusing
  • Welding
  • Pipe Cutting
  • Backfilling if any areas are disturbed by repairs

Getting sewer insurance will also limit your options as to which licensed sewer line professionals to perform repairs. Beware that some companies are not actually insurance companies and are only selling you a maintenance agreement. If it’s not an insurer, it won’t be regulated. Always perform research before choosing the best provider for your needs. Websites like Better Business Bureau  can show a list of complaints a registered provider may have.

Sewer repair can get very expensive so our recommendation is to obtain insurance to avoid costly repairs.
